Medical Visa to India- Seeking Medical Treatment in India
India has become a leading global destination for medical tourism due to its advanced healthcare infrastructure, highly qualified medical professionals, and cost-effective treatment options. To facilitate foreign nationals seeking medical care, the Government of India offers a Medical Visa, a short-term visa category specifically designed for individuals traveling to India for medical treatment.
The Indian Medical Visa is issued to foreign nationals who require diagnosis, surgery, specialized treatment, long-term therapy, or post-operative care at recognized hospitals or medical institutions in India. This visa ensures that patients can legally enter and remain in India for the duration of their treatment while complying with immigration regulations.
Leading Medical Cities and Renowned Hospitals in India
India’s medical tourism ecosystem is supported by world-class hospitals located across major metropolitan cities. New Delhi and Gurugram are home to premier institutions such as AIIMS, Medanta – The Medicity, and Fortis Memorial Research Institute. Mumbai offers advanced treatment facilities at hospitals like Tata Memorial Hospital and Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, particularly known for oncology and specialty care. Chennai, often referred to as the “Health Capital of India,” hosts globally recognized centers such as Apollo Hospitals and MIOT International. Bengaluru and Hyderabad also attract international patients through hospitals like Narayana Health, Manipal Hospitals, and Yashoda Hospitals, providing cutting-edge care across multiple specialties.
Validity and Entry Conditions
Medical visas are generally issued for up to 60 days, often with triple-entry permission, allowing patients to travel in and out of India as needed during treatment. In cases involving prolonged medical care, extensions may be granted by the local Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), subject to submission of updated medical reports and hospital recommendations.
India also offers an e-Medical Visa for eligible nationalities, allowing applicants to apply online and benefit from faster processing.
